At my current school, our diverse student body represents over 75 different countries! And each year, the Elementary School welcomes approximately 125-150 new students! Students and teachers are empathetic; they've all been in the new kid's shoes. But school counselors are in a unique position to provide a warm welcome... and a helping hand, if needed. That's where lunch bunches began.

Within the first week or two, my co-counselor and I host a special "lunch bunch" with pizza, fruit, ice cream, a welcome talk, and a fun game or two. It gives new students a chance to learn more about the school, meet the counselors, discover that they are not alone, and have some fun! There's an added bonus: it helps us as counselors to determine if any students need further support in transitioning.

Moving Away Booklets

Our division created a moving away booklet that even KG students can complete. I fill out the booklet with the student, take photos with them, and then the booklet goes with them as a memento.

Transitions Talk for Parents

At the start of each semester, my co-counselor and I lead a presentation regarding transitions. We collaborate with our Parent School Association to host the event, hoping to attract the 125+ new families!
